Skills
Engineering — Azria often jokes that she can fix anything, and the simple phrase is more fact that boast. Her mother is a mechanic, and Azria would often follow her around as a child to watch her repair something, only to take the device apart and put it back together again once Iza had moved on. Now as an adult serving on starships, Azria knows every inch of the ships she’s posted to. She could probably take the whole ship apart and put it back together again.
Pilot — Azria was a champion small shuttle craft racer. She would find old shuttles in junk yards and completely refurbish them into high speed racers. While originally an engineering game, she ended up becoming a proficient pilot along the way.
Photographic Memory — Azria has a perfect visual memory. She never needs to look up schematics for reference, or take notes as she’s taking something apart. If she’s seen it, she can recreate it.
Symbiont — Since becoming joined, Azria has discovered a number of new skills associated with Ryn’s previous hosts. With Elza’s ears she can tell when something is wrong with the engine from the opposite side of the ship, just from the vibrations through the hull. She’s always been able to fix anything, but with Drezden’s experience, Azria has moved to a whole new level, even designing new parts to improve the ship. Zarin’s instincts help her read and command a room.
Facts
— Azria splits her time between working on the spore drive, and running things in main engineering. Discovery does still have warp and impulse drives, which require their usual maintenance. Lt. Stamets is officially the Chief Engineer on Discovery, but he’s an astromycologist, and his area of expertise is the spore drive, not the other myriad of engineering tasks that keep a starship running. Azria is his second in command, so those tasks tend to fall to her.
— She had been recently promoted to Chief Engineer on the Shenzhou before the Battle at the Binary Stars.
— Joined Trill are very rare. There are only a few hundred Symbionts available for joining every year, though there are thousands of candidates applying. Because of this, the Symbiosis Commission was created. There is a highly competitive initiate process that young Trill must go through to be considered for joining with a Symbiont.
— Zarin Ryn, the symbiont’s previous host, was killed during the Battle at the Binary Stars. The medical team did manage to save the Ryn Symbiont, however, the Symbiont can only survive for a few hours without a host. There was no time to return Ryn to Trill for a new joining, so Azria was joined instead, as she was the only other Trill there.
— Ryn is a highly prestigious Symbiont, always highly contested by initiates when it is open to be joined.
— Azria was not considered for the Trill Initiate program, because they thought she lacked the necessary qualifications. She was cut by the commission at the last round before starting the Initiate process. Even if she had made it in, she would have never been considered for joining with Ryn. She feels highly unworthy in comparison to Ryn’s previous hosts, and believes everyone judges her accordingly.
— All of the previous Ryn hosts are quite famous on Trill. Drezden Ryn was in charge of the program that developed Trill’s first warp drive. Elza Ryn was a singer, whose songs are still widely played on Trill today. Zarin Ryn was the first Trill to become a Starfleet Captain, earning a commission on the USS Victory, one of the new Constitution Class Starships.
— Azria always wanted to become a Captain. Now she wanders if this is an appropriate path, because it’s something Ryn has already experienced.
— She is the first member of the Daine family to be joined with a Symbiont. Her father went through the initiate process, but a Symbiont never became available to him. Her mother was never considered.
— Her younger sister Jazlyn is a current Initiate. Now that Azria has been joined, she worries that her sister never will be, since they won’t want two members of the same family to be joined. Azria thinks this is highly unfair, since Jazlyn is clearly the more qualified candidate.
